Origin of the Malaysia Dragon and Lion Dance Festival
Wherever there are sounds of drums and gongs, there are Chinese people. Lion dancing is a folk tradition in China that has been passed down for thousands of years.
To promote the culture of dragon and lion dancing and to build it into a local tourism and sightseeing brand, the "Dragon and Lion Dance Festival" has been held since 2011 in Hong Kong.
It calls on dragon and lion dance groups around the world to hold their own dragon and lion dance events, aiming to have January 1st recognized as World Dragon and Lion Dance Day in the future. The lion and dragon performances on New Year's Day aim to allow citizens to appreciate the traditional Chinese culture up close.
At the same time, they wish everyone to be as brave and vigorous as the dragon in the coming year, filled with joy and peace.Countries and regions around the world have each held numerous grand events, attracting citizens and tourists to participate.
In recent years, it has become a major tourism event for dragon and lion dancing. So far, more than 10 countries and regions have participated in organizing the Dragon and Lion Dance Festival.
Malaysia's Participation
Malaysia began participating in 2017. All like-minded working teams in Malaysia have successfully organized the Malaysia Dragon and Lion Dance Festival every January 1st. This year marks the eighth year and the sixth edition.
Due to the pandemic, the event was suspended for two years. In 2018 and 2019, as many as 1,200 lion dance performers participated in the grand event.
Objectives:
• Allow more people to deeply understand the lion dance and pass down Chinese culture.
• Teach the audience how to appreciate lion dancing, changing the perception of the lion and dragon culture among parents and children.
Mission:
Participating groups are non-sectarian, non-political, and do not charge performance fees. They dedicate themselves to organizing the Dragon and Lion Dance Festival.
